The life of a homemaker is a busy one (to say the least!) The majority of our tasks are not inherently difficult – but staying on top of them all can be. However, home life doesn’t have to just be exhausting and ordinary. So in this post I’m sharing some simple ways to elevate daily life at home.
You can upgrade your lifestyle by implementing just a few simple changes.
Plan Your Day
Planning ahead is a characteristic of an efficient homemaker. It enables you to prioritise, focus and manage your time more effectively.
Slow Morning Routine
When you start your morning off as slow and relaxed as possible, it sets the tone for the rest of your day.
If you’re able to wake up before your family, this is a great opportunity to get some moments of peace and tranquility. Utilise this extra time to decompress before taking on the duties of the day.
Make sure to incorporate your morning adhkar into your routine.
Dress Well Daily
Dressing up (at home) on a daily basis can make you feel elegant, which puts you in a more positive mindset. As a result, you feel prepared to take on the day.
Our actions and thoughts are connected. Therefore, staying in your pyjamas for longer than necessary, means you start your morning already feeling done for the day.
Have Balanced Meals
A balanced diet is an essential part of maintaining good health. Don’t just eat your toddler’s scraps and a few unhealthy snacks, and call it a day.
Being ‘hangry’ is a real thing. You may be experiencing Mum Rage as a result of neglecting your own basic needs.
Try your best to have a balanced approach when it comes to food – include lean proteins, healthy fats, fruits, vegetables and whole grains (and of course a few treats here and there).

Read Books
Unquestionably the best book is the Qur’an. If you’ve asked the question “how can I be truly happier?” this is your answer – by gaining nearness to your Lord. He is the One who created your heart, He knows it best, and you can only find true happiness by seeking closeness to Ar-Rabb (The Lord and Nurturer).
So with all that in mind, reading at least a portion of the Qur’an and reflecting on it in our daily lives, is imperative.
Thereafter, reading other books in general is a great way to exercise your brain. Whether for the purpose of learning the deen, a new skill or simply for a bit of leisure.
Organise Your Home
Optimising your space is a fundamental part of running a home. It helps to improve the overall appearance and functionality, ensuring it runs more smoothly.
Make Time For Self-Care
You cannot and should not neglect your household duties – however, you also have a duty to take care of yourself.
At the very least you need to be maintaining a basic level of self-care every day. Making sure you are fed, watered, rested and engaging in regular light exercise.
Furthermore, you can sprinkle a bit of pampering into your weekly routine. This can help you to feel refreshed and relieve some built up stress.
Savour Moments of Silence
Resting is a form of productivity. Sometimes you need to set that long to-do list aside and take a break. Incessant busyness actually does more harm than good.
In order to prevent burn-out and overwhelm, it’s important to soak in peaceful moments of silence in your daily life, when you can.

Incorporate Subtle Luxuries at Home
Luxuries don’t have to be expensive or extravagant. They can be little comforts that bring you joy.
Bring a homemaker’s touch and give a homely feel to your space – by incorporating some plush towels, fresh flowers and pleasant scents from a (non-toxic) candle or reed diffuser.
Get Enough Sleep
Now, if you’re a mother you may have sighed at this one. But prioritising quality sleep truly is important; and can help to change your life for the better.
I understand, trying to get those ever-so delightful 7-9 hours of uninterrupted sleep, when you have babies and toddlers, seems futile.
Which is why we’re aiming for quality sleep instead. Try implementing a relaxing bedtime routine, this might look like
- drinking a cup of herbal tea
- having a warm bath/shower
- using magnesium spray
- and diffusing some lavender essential oil
Thereafter, put your phone down, read a book and get to sleep at a good hour.
Getting enough sleep and sleeping at the right time In Shaa Allāh
That’s definitely something I’m working on myself. May Allah make it easy.
