Good homemaking really doesn’t require a bunch of expensive gadgets! You absolutely can care for your home well, even on a budget. There are plenty of items that are nice to have. But all you really need are a few basics to use on a daily basis.
If you are a beginner homemaker, are soon to start your homemaking journey, or know someone who is. Then this is your go to checklist for products that make tending to the home so much easier.
Here are the top affordable homemaking essentials linked below.
Kitchen
We’re starting off with the kitchen. As a homemaker this is where a lot of your time will be spent. And hey, making 3 meals a day takes some serious work. So naturally I’d like to share these great tools to help keep homemaking simple.
1. Cast Iron Skillet
When cared for properly these are a great, healthy alternative to non stick pans.
2. Stainless Steel Pots
Stainless steel is durable and long-lasting cookware. It’s a very good non-toxic option.
3. Wooden Cooking Utensils
A kitchen classic, they even look pretty in a utensil holder on the counter.
4. Measuring Cups and Spoons
I tend to just wing it with the seasonings and amounts when cooking meals. For baking on the other hand, it’s a must to be precise with the ingredients.
5. Mixing Bowl
You can use these for a variety of things like food prep, salads and of course baking.
6. Chopping Board
Definitely a kitchen staple. Another one of those items that adds a nice earthy look to the counter.
7. Knife Set
A good set of knives is a must have for every kitchen. If you’ve ever tried to cut food, especially meat, with a blunt knife then you’ll know it can be a real struggle.
8. Kitchen Scissors
Designated kitchen scissors are helpful as a shortcut to chopping food.
9. Vegetable Peeler
Don’t underestimate the difference a good vegetable peeler can make.
10. Tea Towels
Always a good idea to have plenty of these on hand.
11. Blender
A go-to for soups, smoothies and even deliciously creamy mashed potato.
12. Pyrex Dishes
These are amazing. They really are ideal for meal prep, cooking and freezing.
Cleaning
The best non toxic products you need to keep your home fresh and clean.
1. Cordless Vacuum Cleaner
There’s something about freshly vacuumed floors that makes a room look and feel so much cleaner.
It’s lightweight and you don’t have to worry about wires (with kids, or pets wires are a hassle) so it’s super easy to grab and quickly freshen up a room.
2. Castile Soap
Castile soap has so many uses! To name a few… all-purpose cleaner, hand soap, body wash, bubble bath, gentle laundry detergent and more.
Even better—it’s very concentrated so a little goes a long way.
3. Cleaning Cloths
When wiping up spills and cleaning counters everyday, these are not only more cost effective in the long run, but they work so much better than paper towels.
4. Sponges
Be sure to change them regularly.
5. Scrub Brush Set
For heavy duty cleaning.
6. Glass Spray Bottles
These are ideal for natural cleaners and room sprays.
7. White Vinegar
One of the most versatile non toxic cleaning products you’ll find. It’s great for limescale, glass, floors, toilets, mould and neutralising bad odours.
Okay, I know it doesn’t smell the best. However the smell doesn’t stay once it’s dry aaand honestly, I prefer it over a toxic product like bleach any day.
8. Bicarbonate of Soda
Bicarb is very effective for various household chores. It’s a gentle abrasive which makes it excellent at eradicating tough stains and removing grime without causing any extra wear and tear.
9. Citric Acid
This is similar to vinegar in a way, without the strong smell. It’s also exceptionally good as a toilet bowl cleaner.
10. Gloves
With all the cooking, cleaning and amount of dishes to wash, these are a necessity to help prevent dry hands.
11. Mop
I find this a lot more convenient than a standard mop and bucket when I want to do a quick mop of the floor.
12. Dustpan and Brush
This is small and flat so it’s a lovely space saver.
General
For adding a homemaker’s touch.
1. Baskets, Baskets, Baskets
Truly one of my favourite items on this entire list. They are so useful for a variety of things, toys, clothes, craft supplies, general storage. The list goes on.
2. Baby Carrier
Babies want to be held, a lot. Naturally, they’re tiny and love to be close to their mother.
It’s one of the best parts of being a good homemaker. And while it’s sweet to soak in those beautiful moments of holding your precious baby, there are still household duties to address. Baby wearing allows you to do both.
I know this one is a little pricey BUT it is an investment piece. It can be used from birth to toddler and for successive babies. This will save you from having to buy multiple carriers. It’s also organic cotton!
*IMPORTANT NOTE: Make sure you are wearing your baby safely!
3. Vase
Every home should have an element of beauty. Bring in some greenery, a bouquet, or even some wild flowers for a natural and cosy feel in your space.
4. Essential Oils
Welcome guest into your home with a pleasant aroma.
5. Sewing Machine
Sewing is an essential life skill for everyone (in my opinion). You can save a lot of money by doing your own repairs or making your own clothes and textiles.
6. Fabric
You’ll need some beautiful fabric to go with the sewing machine.
