The way we spend our morning often sets the tone for the rest of the day, so incorporating some slow self-care can give you a cosy start. This helps you then ease into your tasks and makes them run more smoothly.
No matter the stage in your motherhood journey – taking care of you is essential to show up as your best, most loving and kind self.
I’m sure most of us have heard the term “you can’t pour from an empty cup” – but truth be told, many mothers pour from an almost empty cup on a daily basis.
There are definitely seasons, days, moments and situations when this is necessary – where you continue to give, regardless of how exhausted you are.
However, when it’s constant and you are consistently neglecting yourself, it’s not sustainable.
Please Note
By no means am I suggesting you do everything from this list every day. There’s no need to put pressure on yourself – that kind of defeats the point of self-care, doesn’t it?
Baby steps. Simply choose what’s manageable and realistic for your current season of life, and disregard the rest.
Quiet Moments
I personally love cosy season – as the day nears it’s end with a beautifully coloured sunset. The ideal background to begin a peaceful night routine, as this is one of the elements to having a slow routine upon awakening.
The mornings are dark and the world is quiet. While tiny heads lay on their pillows, take your time praying fajr (early morning prayer), having khushoo’ (tranquility and submissiveness).
Thereafter, spend some time reading the Qur’an with focus and reflection.

Morning Sunshine
Enjoy the reshfrement of the morning sunlight and crisp autumn air.
Getting some sun soon after waking up can boost alertness, improve your mood and decrease stress.
Have Screen-free Time
This can be a challenge, but try to avoid reaching for your phone for the first 30 minutes – 1 hour.
It helps to maintain the peace in your mind, before it becomes filled with large amounts of fast paced information.
Enjoy a Warm Drink
Savour a light herbal tea or rich hot chocolate to enhance relaxation.
Gentle Stretching
Getting some movement in at the beginning of your day, helps to ease any muscle aches and improves your flexibility.
Nourish and Hydrate
Coffee doesn’t count as a real breakfast (sorry someone has to say it).
You burn a lot of energy chasing toddlers all day, tending to your home, and especially if you’re breastfeeding or pregnant.
So, as a reminder to myself also – fuel your body.
Get Ready
Remaining in your cosy pyjamas and robe is tempting, but putting on some sophisticated, yet comfortable loungewear can do just as well.
You can still maintain the warm, snuggly feeling, while looking more elegant and put together.
